This book is important because of it's candid depiction of mental illness in a young adult. It's a book about grieving and loving, living and dying. Read this with a friend (or a book club!) because you'll want to discuss it immediately after reading!

This is a tremendous, heartbreaking, and beautiful story of first true love. When I saw that it was being compared to ELEANOR & PARK and THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, I was wary--'cause doesn't every author wish to have her work likened to those beautiful bestsellers? About 100 pages into the story of Finch and Violet, I was completely on board with the comparisons, however, and I think you will agree. Violet and her older sister were in a car wreck months ago--Eleanor lost her life and Violet must now try to move on, not quite knowing how to navigate life without her sister and not beginning to understand how to wade through her own survivor's guilt. Finch is a clever, incredibly intelligent teenage boy who has severe bouts with mental illness, including serious suicidal tendencies. When Finch meets Violet, he allows himself to hope that he may be able to find a way out of his depression. The two characters have a messy, beautiful, and passionate relationship that definitely stands up to Augustus & Hazel's love story while retaining spirit and humor all its own.
