At both shops: Fundraiser for United Way of NE GA's Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
This year we are partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library-United Way of Northeast Georgia in Athens, Georgia with a fundraiser at both bookshops. DPIL is a program that provides children with free books every year from the time they are born until they enter primary school. Avid's goal is to bring four children into the program, each shop funding 2 children! To raise funds, we are selling "blind date" books for $5 each (cash or check only). Please help us reach our goal and support this great cause! This is going to be a friendly neighborhood bookshop rivalry, Prince Ave. vs. Five Points. Whichever shop raises the most money will provide celebratory treats to their winning neighborhood from a local bakery will provide treats one day to their winning neighborhood!
At both shops: Bookseller Match Game
Both locations of Avid Bookshop will have a poster board with pictures of staff members. Customers will try to match staff faces with their favorite book as a kid. Whichever shop has the most matches at the end of the day wins! When customers take a turn, they can enter to win a raffle prize. We will draw from the winning shop's entry box, and this winner will get a book bundle.
At Five Points: Shelf Talker Station & Contest
We will have a shelf talker-writing station outside of the Five Points shop. Readers can write a shelf talker about their favorite book and submit it for a chance to have their shelf talker displayed on our bookshelves! The top 5 shelf talkers will be kept in circulation at our Five Points shop, and the winner of the best shelf talker will get their very own Customer Spotlight featuring their favorite books and shelf talkers in a special display at the Five Points bookshop.
We will also have food vendors at Prince Ave., face painting at Five Points, and more! Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the big day!
Independent bookstores are not just stores; they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent. They hold the joy of having a perfect stranger steer you toward the perfect book. We look forward to sharing our passion for Indie Bookstores (and books in general) with you!
