Jean Anouilh's play "Antigone" is a tragedy inspired by Greek mythology and the play of the same name ("Antigone" by Sophocles). The play was first performed in Paris at the Théâtre de l'Atelier on February 6, 1944, during the Nazi occupation. At the end of a vicious civil war, Antigone defies the king's edict by digging a grave for her brother Polynices, an act of treason punishable by death. The play explores themes of responsibility, justice, and authority with candor, philosophy and brutal passion.
