Event Location

Avid Bookshop on Zoom

Avid Bookshop is honored to host Janine Kwoh for a book event in celebration of Welcome to the Grief Club: Because You Don't Have to Go Through It Alone. This virtual author event will take place on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, from 7pm - 8pm ET via Zoom. Janine will be in conversation with Julia Roessing.

Many of you know Janine's work already: we have carried her Kwohtations cards, stickers, and mini-zines for a couple of years. And we're sure most of you will recognize Julia Roessing, an accomplished actor as well as a therapist with specializations in grief and trauma counseling. Both Janine and Julia are skilled at recognizing light amid the darkness without ever veering into toxic positivity territory. (To steadfastly ignore the nuances of grieving in favor of being "positive" above all else--toxic positivity--can make those in mourning feel invalidated and alone. Rest assured our featured presenters will keep it real.) The featured book and the conversation about it will likely make you smile and laugh as often as it makes you tear up with recognition.

To attend, purchase a ticket (or select a no-cost ticket). You will receive a Zoom link via email one hour before the event begins. Please purchase your tickets early, as ticket sales will be cut off at 7pm ET on the day of the event (February 15, 2022).

We have 3 ticketing options:

  • Pay-What-You-Can ticket & book bundle (including a copy of Welcome to the Grief Club)
  • Pay-What-You-Can ticket only (no book)
  • No-cost ticket to get Zoom event access only (no book)

Please support Athens, Georgia's only independent bookshop (and our author, of course!) by purchasing Janine's book from Avid Bookshop via the link below.

A different and very modern kind of grief book: not a book about how to grieve, but rather a reflection and affirmation of how we grieve, with thoughtful writing and a graphic approach. Janine Kwoh's expression of her grief experience alongside universal truths allow readers to laugh, cry, take what’s useful and leave what’s not, and ultimately feel more seen and less alone.

Welcome to the club that no one ever wants to join but so many of us end up needing. We’re so sorry that you’re here.

Based on her own experience with grief— the author’s partner died when both were in their late twenties—and those of other Grief Club members, Janine Kwoh uses brief writings, illustrations, and creative diagrams to explore the wide range of emotions and experiences that grief can encompass. For anyone who has lost a loved one or who is close to someone who is grieving, Welcome to the Grief Club is a book of solace, connection, hope, and reassurance. It addresses with empathy and honesty the aspects of grief that so many of us experience but that aren’t widely discussed: the variety and volatility of emotions—sadness, anger, guilt, joy; the physical symptoms of grief; and how grief isn’t linear, but it does change and soften over time. It affirms that there is truly no right or wrong way to grieve and assures us that the things we feel that surprise us or seem strange are often common and always valid.

Humor helps us to survive, and the book uses a lighthearted approach to cover powerful topics, like supremely unhelpful things that people say to those who are grieving, grief trigger bingo, and everyday acts of resilience. This book is a companion that says, I see you and you are not alone, from one grieving person to another. It is a gentle reminder to give yourself permission to grieve for as long as—and in whichever ways—you need.

Janine Kwoh is the owner and designer of Kwohtations, a stationery company and letterpress print and design studio. Kwohtations is an ever-evolving collection of greeting cards and gifts that reflect and celebrate a diversity of identities and life experiences, always with humor and empathy. Janine's hope is that others will recognize some of themselves in what she creates and feel a bit more seen, more connected, and less alone. Avid Bookshop carries Kwohtations products in-store--let us know if you want to see some of Janine's work in addition to the featured book!

While Janine doesn't have any formal training in writing or illustration, she believes you can learn how to do anything by reading the internet and asking for help. Exhibit A: This book. When she's not printing cards or writing about grief, you can often find her trying to keep her ducks in a row, but one of them is always wandering off in search of snacks.

Janine currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, but considers home to be wherever her friends are.

Julia Wilson Roessing is a social worker with expertise in grief and trauma counseling. An experienced actor, Julia has been in numerous plays and independent films in Georgia and beyond.
