About Mikey

Mikey began bookselling in 2022 and is Avid's Operations Manager, a bookseller, and a book club moderator. They are known among friends for never failing to sneak a book into the most random of situations, including hiking the gorge floor at Tallulah, seeing their favorite bands at any number of venues, and the twenty minutes of movie previews at the movie theater. They enjoy essays, poetry, horror, literary fiction, and anything that can be called spooky, weird, strange and unusual. Plus, they love perusing and recommending from Avid's children's book and young adult book selections. You can catch them around town reading in bars and other non-conventional spaces (but please don't startle them!), going on hikes, or watching spooky and/or strange (and mostly horror) movies.

Availability: In our warehouse - should arrive/ship in one month. (Currently not on our shelves.)
Published: Soft Skull - February 13th, 2024

A beautiful punch in the gut like one from the mosh pit on a Saturday night. Mariah Stovall's full-length debut sweeps her readers into the tender yet vicious embrace of teenage friendship and meditates on putting on your own life jacket before trying to help others. Stovall reveals connections and personal history slowly, moving between past, present, and future, all woven through with the heroes of post-hardcore, punk, and emo. This novel bears a re-read to untangle the ways that music and fiction intertwine.

Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind: A Novel By Molly McGhee Cover Image
ISBN: 9781662602115
Availability: In our warehouse - should arrive/ship in one month. (Currently not on our shelves.)
Published: Astra House - October 17th, 2023

Molly McGhee's debut novel Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind is a surreal almost-ode, almost-elegy for the modern worker. Abernathy finds himself thrown into circumstances that he doesn't understand, and in fact forces himself to not understand to preserve his sanity. This strategy works...until it doesn't. Keenly aware of the ways that labor works today and deeply inventive in the ways that she addresses it, McGhee crafts a darkly comic tale for this age. What starts as a workplace novel turns nightmare-ish (literally!) as the relationships between these compassionately rendered characters unfolds. If you love a reimagination of modern life through a darkly surrealist lens, pick this up!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue By V. E. Schwab Cover Image
ISBN: 9780765387578
Availability: In our warehouse - should arrive/ship in one month. (Currently not on our shelves.)
Published: Tor Books - April 11th, 2023

V.E. Schwab's novel The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is expansive in its scope, but immensely confined and tender in its approach to character and memory. After a Faustian deal gone wrong (as they are wont to do!), Addie is immortal, but cursed to always be forgotten. Wander across the world with Addie as she slips unnoticed into history, that is until she meets a cozy bookseller who can do the incredible -- remember her. Schwab accomplishes the incredible feat of bringing you to new worlds seamlessly and completely, as varied as contemporary New York and historical Paris. Exploring love, loss, and the sands of history and memory, this book is truly un-forgettable. A gorgeous read to sink into in over a free afternoon!
