This book made me think, a lot. Small Great Things examines racism from all angles and as a result made me examine my own prejudice and bias. The story revolves around the death of a baby, the baby's white supremacist father and the black nurse he blames for the baby's death. Picoult captures the story authentically from all sides and exposes the dark underlying biases we all harbour deep and hidden in our psyche. I could not put this book down, and when I finished it I wanted to talk about it to all my friends and see if they had the same reaction I did.
Outlander is a wonderful book that cannot be identified by one genre. It is romance, fantasy, and historical fiction all wrapped into one amazing story. This book has characters you love, and some you love to hate. Claire, a strong independent woman, time travels into the 18th century and smack into the jacobite rebellion where she falls in love with a tall red headed scottsman, Jamie Fraser and runs afoul of the treacherous Black Jack Randall. It is also well researched and full of interesting facts about 18th century life, medicine, crime and punishment. One of my favorite books of all time.
This book is a must read for anyone who doesn't really understand Black Lives Matter and why it exists. It is a story that you want to read because it is well written and authentic. I came away with a better understanding of what it means to be young and black in America. I love this book because it made me feel good and uncomfortable at the same time. I couldn't put it down.
I picked up Little Fires Everywhere when looking for something to read. I had no expectations, and was overwhelmed by how much I enjoyed this book. About the secrets we keep and how they motivate us to do the things we do, centers around an afluent suburbian Detroit family, a single mother and her daughter. Each character has secrets and tries to find answers to thier questions without revealing things to each other or themselves. Good fun read.
