Katie is a bookseller, subscriptions assistant, YA-for-not-so-YA book club co-moderator, and SciFi/Fantasy enthusiast. She has been trying to get people to read Thessaly by Jo Walton since she started working at Avid in February 2018 and wants you to come in and talk to her about it. When not at Avid, she is wandering the woods in search of dogs and doorways to other worlds.
I reread this series all the way through every year; Maggie Stiefvater has spun a feeling that is so overwhelmingly summer, a time of fleeting teenage freedom and hazy sun. I'm a little bit in love with these characters, with Henrietta, VA, with psychics and dead kings and wishes, so I'm a whole lot in love with this book. Please, pick it up. Then come back and talk to me about it.
This book gave me literary whiplash. I must have stepped off the end of the earth while reading, because I finished this book bruised and shaken and floating in space. Read this, it will mess you up.
Holy s*%t! I love this book. Is it snowing right now? Is it raining? Do you have plans to hike to a lush meadow in the deep expanse of a foreboding wood? If any of the above, bring this book with you. It's chock full of incredible characters, so rich with them that I might just recommend drinking a glass of milk to wash them all down. Plus, if you're a fan of Uprooted, this is the book you've been waiting to find. You're welcome!
I've been a fan of Eowyn Ivey since Snow Child came out in 2015. The worlds she creates are unfailingly beautiful, rich with characters that feel like members of my family. This novel, written in a series of journal entries, newspaper clippings, and artifacts, is a favorite of mine. If you're looking for a good book to read while the leaves change color, look here.
Thessaly is a god d*!# experience. It's the complete trilogy, starting with The Just City and following the wild evolution of an experiment no one knew could evolve. If you're a fan of philosophy, this is your book. If you love intricately built worlds and thoughtfully realistic characters, this is your book. Thessaly suprises and stuns at every turn- a must read if you want to stay in my good graces.
